Nike Presents First Dunk: A Story About LeBron James

Filed under: NBA Stars — Tags: — admin @ 9:56 am

As coincidental as any encounter can be, James McDonald first met LeBron James while serving as his sixth, seventh and eighth grade gym teacher at Riedinger Middle School in Akron, Ohio. As the school’s annual student-faculty basketball game approached during James’ eighth grade year, little did McDonald know that he would be a witness to a special moment in history as LeBron James would go on to execute his first-ever dunk. With an almost prescient initiative, McDonald kept the rim to serve as a memento of the event. In Nike Presents: “First Dunk,” McDonald briefly discusses his observations of a young LeBron James and of the student-faculty athletic game that would eventually lead to James’ impressive first-ever dunk.

James Donald was a physical education teacher in the Akron public school system for 28 years, primarily at Riedinger Middle School where he became LeBron’s gym teacher for James’ sixth, seventh and eighth grade years. Mr. Donald witnessed history late in LeBron’s eighth grade year when, during the annual student-faculty basketball game, LBJ executed his first-ever dunk. Mr. Donald kept the rim, featured opposite, as a memento of the event.

“We have a student-faculty game at the end of every year. We use it as a fundraiser, and everybody pays a buck to get in. It’s right during the day—not after school—so everybody comes and the gym is packed.

That year the eighth grade team was unbeaten. So we played ‘We are the champions’ by Queen before the game. We were pumping it up and the kids were going crazy. Then we introduced the starting lineups. We introduced the teachers and we came out. And at that point the teachers we were undefeated. If I was there for 20 years, we were 19-1, that was the only game the teachers ever got beat. Some of the games were tough and some of the games were so easy that we let up so we wouldn’t win by thirty. But those guys were so good. They ran us to death. We were two steps behind them, if not more and they were probably up by twenty at the half.

He got a steal probably just on the other side of half court, took it all the way on the right hand side and, just took it home. It wasn’t one of his signature dunks but for an eighth-grader he was just long and lanky and went up and dunked it. The kids just went crazy. First dunk in a game.

I saw LeBron play basketball day after day after day, because he’d eat lunch and then come to the gym for lunch recess. But I never saw him even attempt to dunk before that. I don’t know if it was because the hype of the game, but I can’t say that he was saving it up because how would he know he’d get the chance? You can’t plan that ahead of time in a game like that.

It was like it was meant to be. He had the perfect steal. Got the break away. I was probably about 20 feet behind him, thinking there’s no way I’m going to catch him or even run after him. Then the last three steps he just elevated and took it home. It was a total surprise. And he could already get over the rim. He was probably over the rim ten inches. I think the game came to a stop for just a second and he jogged back to the other end of the court. That was the exclamation point, like, ‘Hey, we beat you guys.’”

It’s crunch time for NBA negotiations

LeBron James

But even if much of what he said was over the top by design in order to pressure both sides into a deal, it is clear we are approaching a major crossroads in the talks to end the NBA lockout and save the 2011-12 season.

“There are enormous consequences at play here on the basis of the weekend,” said the NBA commissioner after four hours of talks between the league and its players’ association wrapped up in Manhattan.

The two sides will meet again on Friday and on the weekend, with the NBPA expected to bring in heavy hitters like LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony for the first time in what will be major sessions, the first since the lockout began on July 1st.

According to Yahoo! Sports, the owners finally moved on demands for a hard salary cap on Tuesday, though restrictive stipulations were inserted in its place.

Ken Berger of CBS Sports said the owners stuck to that line of thinking Wednesday.

If they are going to budge on a hard cap, they will do so only if they punish the players in other areas.

NBPA president Derek Fisher alluded that the two sides aren’t all that close to a deal, but are meeting simply because if they don’t, they will run out of time to get a season.

“I think it points more toward the calendar than actually being able to measure progress,” Fisher said.

“It points to the realities that we face with our calendar and that if we can’t find a way to get some common ground really, really soon, then the time of starting the regular season at its scheduled date is going to be in jeopardy big-time.

“I can’t say that common ground is evident, but our desire to try to get there I think is there,” said the longtime Laker. “We still have a great deal of issues to work through, so there won’t be any magic that will happen this weekend to just make those things go away. But we have to put the time in. We have a responsibility to people to do so.”

Not the most promising words in the world, but, again, there are a lot of things to be ironed out before the talks can take a major step forward.

As Stern said of the coming discussions: “I’m focused on, let’s get the two committees in and see whether they can either have a season or not have a season.

“(It’s) a period of enormous opportunity and great risk.”

The risk is that if a deal isn’t in sight in a few days, it will only be a month until the scheduled start of the regular season and there won’t be enough time to have free agency, training camps and exhibition games without some real contests being wiped out. Already, 43 pre-season games have been cancelled.

Obama Is LeBron James — ‘He’s Disappeared In Critical Times’

Conspicuously missing in the heat of many legislative battles waged in Washington, D.C. since he was inaugurated in January 2009 has been President Barack Obama. On health care, the 2009 stimulus, and now the current debate over how to resolve the federal government’s fiscal situation, the president is nowhere to be found.

On Monday’s “Morning Joe” on MSNBC, host Joe Scarborough likened Obama to the Miami Heat’s LeBron James.

“Things seem to be of an ad hoc nature,” Scarborough said, “whether you talk about a stimulus program you throw on Nancy Pelosi while he stands on the side of the court or a health care bill that they fight for a year and a half that they throw to the House and the Senate while the president stands on the side of the court. And again, a year and a half into the most heated ideological debate of his presidency, Democrats were coming on this show having no idea whether he was for or against the public option because he revealed his hand to nobody. He’s always on the side of the court.”

Scarborough then cast Obama in the role of LeBron James, whose team lost in the NBA Finals last season to the Dallas Mavericks in part because he underperformed.

“And when this president said in 2004, Mark Haleprin, ‘I’m LeBron, baby,’ he meant it,” Scarborough continued. “He’s disappeared in critical times. And just like LeBron in the finals.”

Mr. Optimistic Lebron James is “Optimistic” about Lockout

Filed under: NBA Stars — Tags: — admin @ 12:28 pm

But that does not stop Lebron James from being optimistic about the league this summer. The “King” of the NBA told The AP during an interview that he was “optimistic” that the NBA season this year can be saved.

In an interview with The Associated Press, James says he is committed to helping the United States defend its gold medal at next summer’s London Games. James has been working in Houston with Hakeem Olajuwon this offseason, and insists he will be “even better” this coming season for the Miami Heat, who lost in the NBA finals.

LeBron James says he is so “optimistic” that the coming NBA season will be played that he is not considering any possible international options – except for the 2012 Olympics.

When you’re making a million dollars a day from Nike, there isn’t that urgent feeling to go overseas and leave your family for a couple months. That isn’t the story here.

The story is that the league’s “savior” believes the two sides can agree on the $800 million difference within the next 2-3 months. If not agreed on before late October, the NBA will have a shortened season this year. But Mr. Optimistic thinks his union will agree to give up some of their +$800 million money advantage before the NBA season starts.

If they are unable, the NBA season may miss “not 1, not 2, not 3… and so on and so on” months of the season.

Why LeBron James get some much glory and media attention, I meen what is so special about him? There is no best player in the NBA. I do not meen are the guys that are better than Steve Nash, Tim Duncan, Wade Dywan, dagger, and of couse Kobe Bryant. So why of attention to it, I think it’s very overestimated Liset the other stars were just more of it. Meen, I could not even win a match in the final to be embarresed. However, it is still all the media attention, the armies of offside, and many Cavs games teivised i meen even national LeBron Cavs team with flat boring to watch. Do not even think Michael Jordan was hit as much as LeBron. LeBron not the best player in the NBA Brynat think Kobe is much better than him at that time.

What the NBA Lockout means for LeBron James

As an NFL fan, there is one word right now that gives me a greater headache than anything else. It has replaced the word ‘decision’, which I really never thought was possible.

That word is, of course, ‘lockout’.

Day 108 of the NFL lockout, day 1 of the NBA lockout.

If you believe what you read and what you hear, which really is all any of us can go on, the NBA lockout promises to dwarf the NFL’s, at least in duration. Whilst the NFL is still a high profit maker and faces no real threats to problems such as failing small market teams and players actively selling themselves as duos/threesomes, the NBA has these and many other things to worry about.

lebron james miami heat

lebron james miami heat

The biggest problem the NBA faces is that supposedly 22 of the 30 teams are all losing money. I don’t know which are the chosen 8 teams that are keeping out of the red, but with Stern as commissioner I think it’s fair to say New York, Boston, LA and Chicago are part of the select few.

So the 2011/2012 season is in serious doubt, especially considering the owners of the 22 teams that are losing money will be losing less if they do not have a season. Majority rules and they hold the majority so we are looking at a long time without basketball.

So what does that mean for the NBA’s most controversial and talked about player? It could be the best thing that could have happened for him.

LeBron James rode a roller coaster over the past 12 months that most players don’t experience over their entire career. He went from the undisputed face and darling of the league, to a betraying traitor, to a national enemy, to a quitter, to a second option, to a third option, then back to being the best player in the league. That was all within the first week of the regular season.

James needs a break. The guy flat out needs a break. None of us can slightly fathom what he goes through, what is going on in his head, whether this actually all gets to him and how he deals with that. We have never seen anything like him or the treatment he gets in the history of sport, and we may never again. So when people try to make judgement on his character or his decisions or his life, it’s truly a narrow minded, naive thing to do.

James is a tireless off season worker, anyone that questions that doesn’t know what they’re talking about. The last 4 off seasons he has taken his personal trainer and shooting guru Chris Jent everywhere he goes, flying him to LeBron’s vacation spots around the world to work on his game. We have seen him come on leaps and bounds every year of his career and don’t expect that to stop.

So as far as worrying about James losing an edge to his game, losing explosiveness or anything of that nature, it isn’t going to happen. It will be much easier for the NBA player’s to stay in shape and stay sharp compared to the NFL players.

LeBron James will have at the least another few months to get away from the game, get away from the media, away from the fans and away from his life as we know it. No doubt he or we will find a way to get him into the news, but he will be able to keep as great a distance from the spotlight as he so chooses.

I think LeBron James has suffered through the hardest season of his career. He was always going to upset someone with his decision, he was always going to take a year to adjust to his new teammates, his new surroundings and his new life. Despite the idea of a ‘championship or failure’, the Heat’s season was far from a failure.

James will come back revitalized, accustomed and secure. He will not see anything next year he did not conquer this year. More than anything I believe he will be much happier than he was this year. Happiness off the court will do huge things on it, and I believe that mental barrier ultimately cost him a lot this season.

The lockout will hurt a lot of people, and it will hurt LeBron James in that he will have a shortened period of what people call his ‘prime’. He will lose ground on records he is chasing, and if we lose an entire season it will be another long wait before he can once again try to win his first championship.

Whilst all those are negatives, I think the lockout may be the best thing that could have happened to LeBron James.

As an NBA fan it comes at a huge price, but despite the selfishness and arrogance of the people that are denying us our game, only good will come of it.

My entire life I have refused to jump on board with baseball. I understand it has a huge following and is ‘America’s past time’, but it was always something I just could not stand. Since the NFL lockout I am ashamed to say I now call myself a baseball fan. We will all need to make sacrifices to satisfy our sport hunger.

If I can get into baseball, there is hope for all of America to survive another undetermined period of time where sport is taken away from us because millionaires fight over money none of them need and really none of them deserve.

LeBron James: Why Boston Fans Should Take It Easy on King James

LeBron James Has a Complicated Relationship with the City of Boston

lebron james

lebron james

I’m going to put on my subjective hat for a second. For all intents and purposes, it’s the only way that I can admit that I’m a native of New England and thus a huge fan of Boston sports teams.

Right then, now that I have my subjective hat on, let’s talk about the Boston Celtics. They are my favorite NBA team, so I’m pretty distraught that they are down 1-0 in their series against the Miami Heat. This has a lot to do with the fact that there are a lot of villains in the eyes of Celtics fans, and LeBron James is at or near the top of the list.

Yup, just like everywhere else. And just like everywhere else, King James will be mercilessly booed when the series shifts to Boston on Saturday night.

However, LeBron is not entirely without ties to the city of Boston. And unfortunately for us Celtics fans, they are very tricky ties.

As awesome as the Celtics are, they are not the main draw in Boston. That honor belongs to the Red Sox until further notice.

By now, my guess is that most of you know where I’m going with this.

The Red Sox are owned by John Henry, and he has done great things for the team since taking over in 2002. He also happens to run an investment company called the Fenway Sports Group. That same group owns Liverpool F.C. of the English Premier League.

Through Fenway Sports Group, LeBron James himself is a part owner of that same team.

If you didn’t know that, no doubt you can see why hating LeBron might be tricky for a Boston fan.

Of course, none of this will matter when LeBron steps out onto the TD Garden on Saturday. He will be booed every time he does anything, and methinks there will be unflattering chants too.

This is where my voice is going to fall on deaf ears, but I am going to implore Celtics fans to take it easy on LeBron for the rest of this series, and maybe for a long time afterwards too. It’s all well and good if you don’t like LeBron, but it might not be the best idea to treat one of John Henry’s business partners with such disrespect. I don’t think he would retaliate in any way, but I think it’s better to be safe than sorry. I don’t know about you, but I would hate to wake up one morning and find out that Jon Lester has been traded.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go. A brick just came flying through my window, and I fear there may be more.

LeBron James, Michael Vick, Ben Roethlisberger Have Improved Public Images Thanks To Winning Seasons

Back in the summer of 2010,  LeBron James, Michael Vick and Ben Roethlisberger each had a negative image in the eyes of the public.
James made the wrong call in hosting The Decision, an hour-long event on ESPN that revealed where he would be bringing his talents in the upcoming season. Vick was still receiving heavy scrutiny after spending nearly two years in jail for his connection to a dogfighting operation, while Roethlisberger was suspended the first four games of the NFL season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. However, the three star athletes managed to improve their image since then.
According to CNBC.com, the Q Scores Company has revealed that the public holds a more positive image of James, Vick, and Roethlisberger since the summer. The likely reason behind their improved status with the public? Winning.
The Heat haven’t been dominating with its big three as much as originally expected, but the team has flirted with first place all season, and James’ numbers have him heading for a third straight MVP have helped lower his negative perception.
Last year, Q Scores ranked Vick as the athlete with the most negative image, but after his terrific 2010 season — one in which he set career highs in passing yards, passing touchdowns and quartberback rating — the percentage of people that thought he had a negative image dropped from 61 percent to 49 percent. The Eagles had a 8-3 record in the regular season with Vick starting.
Additionally, Roethlisberger improved his positive image by nearly 35 percent after a 9-3 regular season record and carrying his Pittsburgh Steelers to the Super Bowl for the third time in six years.
Roethlisberger, Vick and James may be seeing their positive stock rising in the public eye, but there are other athletes who are slowing sinking into a negative light. Both Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens have received a significant amount of negative attention due to their mix-ups with performance-enhancing drugs, and their numbers aren’t increasing anytime soon.

Miami Heat LeBron James Has Boston Curse: Can He Ever Lead A Team Over The Celtics In A Big Game

lebron james mami hearts

lebron james mami hearts

The game in Boston was going in Miami’s favor. The Heat had erased a double digit fourth quarter deficit as they took advantage of a tired Boston club. As the final moments of the game were unfolding the Heat were down two points with 18 seconds left and the ball was in the hands of the supposed King. James would draw the foul on Paul Pierce and get to the line with a chance to tie the game. In the end LeBron would do what he has always done against Boston in big time moments. He failed. He bricked one of the free throws and that would secure his teams fate. In the final moments, it was Mike Miller, not LeBron James that had the crack to send the game into overtime with a three. Maybe Erik Spoelstra is smarter than he looks and knows a little history between LeBron and the Celtics. NBA jerseys

This is not the first time James has failed in the big moments against the Celtics. In 2008, LeBron’s Cavs pushed Boston to seven games in the Eastern Conference semi finals. He would have an epic shoot out duel with Paul Pierce. However, in the final minute, LeBron faltered and the Celtics would reign supreme. In 2009 the Celtics would beat the Cavs in the final moments of the March 6th game. In that game LeBron would choke by taking a questionable three despite being down two points and only Tony Allen in front of him. It is true the Cavs and Celtics would split the series in 09, but the LeBron led Cavs only took advantage of a KG less Celtics during a meaningless regular season. The Celtics in 2010 would be the team that sent LBJ and his top seeded Cavs packing in the Conference semi Finals. Fans in Cleveland still say he gave up on his team as he chocked in the big moments of that series. The bottom line is there is a body of work here that suggests that the Celtics send the self proclaimed King to his knees.

The bottom line is LeBron is the modern day Wilt Chamberlain. He gets his stats and all the hype. However, great teams like Boston make the man’s gaudy stats go for not. Guys like Paul Peirce, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins, and Ray Allen play great team defense. The Celtics also have a defensive genius in Doc Rivers that forces LeBron to play to his weaknesses more like jump shooting and the low post. The Celtics also have the offensive fire power to keep up with LeBron.

However, LeBron does not help himself. He takes many bad jump shots. His ego is too large to admit that the low post not on the move is not his ideal scoring move. That game in 09 typified for me LeBron against Boston. He could have bulled Allen over and scored for the tie. Instead he took a jump shot that he had not made once during the game. Confidence is one thing, but his brain needs to do a better job of letting him know his limits. Until that happens

Until LeBron can beat Boston when it actually means something (playoffs) or stop losing in such spectacular fashion, he will forever be cursed by the Green. Remember Go Green Or Go Home!
